MAKING JAM

Plum Victoria - 1 Tree

The plums on Dad’s tree

looked ripe enough

so

careful of  marauding wasps

I picked a bagful of the best.

The one I tasted

did not bowl me over with  its sweetness

or its juiciness

nevertheless

I dutifully went through the process

of converting the raw fruit

into edible jam,

adding the right amount of water,

the right amount of sugar,

boiling just long enough,

simmering for the recommended time,

scooping the scum off the top,

warming the clean jar,

letting the jam cool,

leaving it to set.

**

It was delicious,

sweet, not runny,

golden plummy,

just as Dad would have made it.
